Certification
How do I obtain a trusted certificate?
A trusted certificate can be obtained from a Trusted Certification Authority such as the UK e-Science Certification Authority.
Other certificate information.
All other certificate related information such as how to import into a browser, renew, back-up, etc. can also be found on the UK e-Science Certification Authority's website. Certificate problems and queries should be directed to your relevant Certification Authority. A more general overview of certificates can be found in this GridPP article.
Please Note: a certificate is only a form of authentication, NOT authorisation. The possession of a certificate does not necessarily give you access to any resource.
Virtual Organizations (VOs)
What are VOs and what are they for?
VOs or "Virtual Organizations" are groups of grid users who share similar goals and requirements who therefore can work collaboratively. This provides them with access to a diverse and relevant array of resources irrespective of their geographical location and physical organization. You need to be a member of at least one VO before you can submit jobs to the grid; this form of authorisation is necessary to help ensure the integrity of the data on the grid.
How do I find/join a VO?
You can choose from a categorized list of VOs. The application procedure is specific to each VO and information regarding this is usually found on the respective VO's website. A helpful page that provides more information regarding VOs can be found here.

How do I submit a job to the EGEE grid?
Once you possess a trusted certificate and are authorised as a member of a VO (see above FAQs for how to achieve these two steps), you can access the grid via a 'portal'. A Portal is simply a webpage which leaves the complicated technicalities to the technicians and allows the user to submit jobs in a relatively user-friendly manner. It is possible to use the grid without a portal just by using command line interfaces but this demands a greater level of technical ability and will not be covered in this section. To see how to prepare, submit and retrieve a job click here for a tutorial that uses the GILDA Grid Tutor portal.
